BERTHIER LOUIS ALEXANDRE: (1753-1815) Marshal of France, Prince of Neuchatel. Chief of Staff under Napoleon. A good L.S., `Alexandre´, one page, 4to, gilt edges, Dresden, 8th July 1813, to his aide-de-camp General Bailly de Monthion, in French. The present letter is written during the preparation of the Battle of Dresden, which will take place a month later. Berthier sends to Bailly de Monthion a copy of the letter he has sent to the King of Westphalia, Napoleon´s brother Jerome Bonaparte, forwarding the Emperor´s orders regarding troops movements, and stating in part `Je vous envoye, Général, copie de la lettre que j’écris à S.M. le Roi de Westphalie. Vous y verrez que le 3° Régiment d’Infanterie de ligne Westphalien, le 2° de ligne et le 1° bataillon d’infanterie légère venus de Magdebourg et Cassel avec 12 bouches à feu, doivent se réunir à Dresde sous le commandement du Général Danloup-Verdun. Ainsi quand ces troupes arriveront à Dresde, elles devront s´y arrêter jusqu´à nouvel ordre...´ (Translation: "I am sending you, General, a copy of the letter I am writing to His Majesty the King of Westphalia. You will see that the 3rd Westphalian Line Infantry Regiment, the 2nd Line and the 1st Light Infantry Battalion from Magdeburg and Cassel with 12 cannons, must assemble in Dresden under the command of General Danloup-Verdun. So when these troops arrive in Dresden, they must stop there until further notice.") Paper with a 1806 FHF watermark. VG

Louis Danloup-Verdun (1769-1847) Westphalien officer. Appointed General of division a week after the present letter was written.
