BERNHARDT SARAH: (1844-1923)

BERNHARDT SARAH: (1844-1923) French stage actress. An unusual vintage hand tinted colour postcard photograph of the actress in a head and shoulders pose in costume from the title role of Paul Hervieu´s play Théroigne de Mericourt (1902). At the head of the image appears an ink note by an admirer addressed to Bernhardt and dated 3rd October 1905, asking if it is true if she is also called Rosine. Bernhardt responds with an answer of three-lines confirming that as well as Rosine, she was also born with the forenames Henriette and Marie. Signed by Bernhardt in black fountain pen ink across the image, also adding the year in her hand beneath her signature. Some very light, minor age wear, otherwise VG

Bernhardt´s full name at birth was indeed Henriette-Marie-Rosine Bernhard.

Sold for €360
Estimated at €250 - €350
