CANETTI ELIAS: (1905-1994) (x4)

CANETTI ELIAS: (1905-1994) Bulgarian-born British novelist and playwright, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1981. A good, small correspondence collection of four A.Ls.S., Elias Canetti, (all also ´signed´ a second time in full at the head of the stationery), four pages (total), 8vo, Zurich, 1982-92, all to Menno Kohn of the International Literatuur Bureau, in German. Each of the letters concern different works by Canetti, in the first letter providing his consent for a student theatre group from Groningen to stage his play Hochzeit for five performances (10th April 1982), in the second letter sending his contract for a paperback edition of Het Martyrium (7th June 1989), the third letter concerns the rejection of a theatrical adaptation of Die Blendung, and states (translated) ´I have just received a theatrical adaptation of my novel ´Die Blendung´ from the publisher....Under no circumstances can I give my consent to a theatrical adaptation of the novel. I have never been asked for permission, I would never have given it, and I am very surprised that this finished Dutch version is now being sent to me for reading´ (8th June 1990), and the final letter makes reference to Masse und Macht, stating (translated) ´I have now received a letter from the theatre.....and unfortunately I have to decide against a dramatic adaptation of ´Masse und Macht´. Unfortunately, I am unable to comment on this in detail as I have to go into hospital in the near future. For the same reason, I would ask you to inform the theatre on my behalf that I cannot allow an adaptation of ´Masse und Macht´for the theatre under any circumstances´ (14th December 1992). All are accompanied by the original envelopes, hand addressed by Canetti, and two featuring his signature (´Canetti´) in the return addresses to the versos. One letter has a lengthy, neat tear to the right edge of the central horizontal fold, otherwise VG to EX, 4
