GEORGE II: (1683-1760) & PULTENEY WILLIAM (1684-1764)

GEORGE II: (1683-1760) King of Great Britain and Ireland 1727-60. D.S., George P[rinceps] C[ustos] R[egni] by the Prince of Wales, as Prince Guardian of the Realm, at the head, one page, folio, Court at St. James´s, 24th November 1716. The manuscript document is addressed to Henry, Earl of Lincoln, Paymaster General of His Majesty´s Guards, Garrisons and Land Forces, and is a warrant ´to Pay unto Major Generall Joseph Sabine, the summ of Four hundred Ninety Five Pounds Ten Shillings, in full satisfaction of the Extraordinary Expences he was at, during the time he Commanded His Majtys. Forces in North Britain.....´. Countersigned (´Wm. Pulteney´) at the foot by William Pulteney (1684-1764) English politician who served as Secretary at War 1714-17 and is also sometimes considered as having been the Prime Minister of Great Britain for two days, 10th - 12th February 1746. To the verso appears a manuscript receipt signed by Sabine acknowledging the payment from the Earl of Lincoln. An attractive and rare document. With blank integral leaf. Henry Clinton (1684-1728) 7th Earl of Lincoln. English politician and courtier who served as Paymaster of the Forces 1715-20 and Cofferer of the Household 1725-28.

Joseph Sabine (c.1661-1739) British General who served in the Nine Years´ War, War of the Spanish Succession, and Jacobite Rising of 1715. In 1716 Sabine commanded a brigade sent to confront the Old Pretender and son of King James II, James Francis Edward Stuart´s army at Perth. Later that year he became Commander of the British Army throughout Scotland, leading to the Duke of Atholl to complain of 'the conduct of General Sabine and other King's officers, in regard to rebel prisoners and ... of the plundering and other impositions made by the troops' in Perthshire.
