HAUSSMANN GEORGES-EUGENE: (1809-1891)
HAUSSMANN GEORGES-EUGENE: (1809-1891) Baron Haussmann. French official and urban planner, famous for his renovation of Paris (1853-70) which was commissioned by Napoleon III. A.L.S., G E Haussmann, two pages, 8vo, Chateau de Cestas, Pessac, 27th September n.y., to Monsieur Grandral, in French. Haussmann forwards a letter (no longer present) which he has received and asks Grandral to go with Charles to Haussmann’s house to search the papers for anything that might relate to the water service, in particular a file relating to hydraulics, further remarking ‘Il y a aussi un memoire regle et acquitte de Foster Hermann (?), relatif a l'installation des pompes et des conduits au Moulin de Rouillac…… aussi a la distribution des eaux dans le chateau et aux alentours, qui me serai fort utile’ (Translation: ‘There is also a completed and acquitted memorandum from Foster Hermann (?) relating to the installation of pumps and conduits at the Moulin de Rouillac……also to the distribution of water in the castle and surrounding areas, which will be very useful to me’), asking Grandral to visit the Foster Hermann company ‘pour leur demander s'ils ont confirme un plan quelconque de l'establissement de la conduite, la montee d l'eau et de la distribution’ (Translation: ‘to ask them if they have confirmed any plan for the establishment of the pipe, the rise of the water and distribution’) and also adding that nobody knows the exact place of the manholes and discharge valves, ‘Je crains qu'il n'y en ait plus que nous n'en avons retrouve et que des fuites existent en des points inconnus meritant quelques reparations’ (Translation: ‘I fear that there are more than we have found and that leaks exist at unknown points requiring some repairs’). In a postscript Haussmann refers to the recent weather, ‘Pluies diluviennes, sauf la journee d'hier qui a ete belle. Aujourd'hui, apres une averse horrible pendant la nuit entiere, soleil, temps doux, mais pluie probable ce soir’ (Translation: ‘Torrential rains, except yesterday which was beautiful. Today, after a horrible downpour overnight, sunshine, mild weather, but rain likely this evening’). With blank integral leaf. VG
